Recipe for Success

Abu Dharr said:

The Messenger of Allah said to me: “Have Taqwa of Allah wherever you are, and follow an evil deed with a good one to wipe it out, and treat the people with good behavior.”

Sounds easy, right?

Brother Abdullah Oduro goes into much more detail, much more eloquently than I could.

Have Taqwa of Allah, fear Allah, remember Him, wherever you are. In the masjid, in salat, at work, out shopping, at social events, when getting a haircut, taking a walk with your darling, adorable wife (or strong, handsome husband, as the case may be). Remember Allah in your heart, strive to keep your heart oriented toward Allah, and manifest it on your tongue and with your limbs.

Follow a bad deed with a good deed, He will replace it, InshaAllah. Allah and His messenger make it clear that we’re going to sin, we’re going to forget, make mistakes, be selfish and arrogant.  But no matter what we do, as long as we remember Allah and follow up our sins with good deeds, InshaAllah the sins will be wiped out. Maintain the Salat: it’s a good deed that we do 5 times a day, may Allah accept from us, and InshaAllah it will correct for wrong that we committed in the meantime.

Treat the people well, have good manners, show mercy and generosity, be patient. Try to be a person you can respect. We all live here together, we all interact, we’re all different, and we’re all beautiful creations. Recognize the humanity, value, and dignity of others, help them to remember God and encourage good deeds. InshaAllah we can help each other.

This addresses three, fundamental relationships: there’s the relationship between me and the Creator; the one beween me and my self; and the one between me and all the rest of the creation. If we get them all correct, if we try as hard and diligently as we can, InshaAllah we’ll be successful in this life and the next.

May Allah guide me, you, all of us, to better, Ameen.
