Unboxing ‘pomodori a grappolo’

I’m not quite sure what I can say about John Gossage‘s pomodori a grappolo. Professional photographers that I admire heap praise on Gossage’s work, on his seeing, so there must be something there, but after 4 trips through the 3, large books that make up pomodori a grappolo, I’m still not quite getting it.

the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful

In Surah Ali ‘Imran, Allah azza wa jall tells us:

وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا فَعَلُوا فَاحِشَةً أَوْ ظَلَمُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ ذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا لِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَن يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَمْ يُصِرُّوا عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلُوا وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ

And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins – and who can forgive sins except Allah ? – and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.

Those – their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.

Bergger Pancro 400 at 125

I’m awful at remembering to check settings on cameras before I start shooting. I’ve gotten a little bit better over the years, maybe, but I still lose it from time to time. For this year’s summer vacation, I took along some Bergger Pancro 400 in 35mm and 120. I managed to set the Olympus XA to 400 right after loading, but somehow forgot with the Yashica Mat-124.

Actually, it never even crossed my mind, and I didn’t realize it until I was almost headed home… Continue reading “Bergger Pancro 400 at 125”

Unwrapping ‘Jack Pierson’

I stumbled across this 2008 catalog from an exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in the Photography section of a Half Price Books, shelved incorrectly, shoved in between a couple of large Ann Geddes books and sortof pushed to the back, as if someone was trying to hide it. It was still in the wrapper from the publisher, and the only copy in the store, so I couldn’t get a look inside. I was intrigued.

I posted a picture on twitter and asked if anyone was aware of it, hemmed and hawed for a bit: should I or shouldn’t I? I figured $7 wasn’t too much, and I had a 50% off coupon, so I pulled the trigger.

James and Hana’s Summer Vacation

For our annual late-summer vacation,* my darling, adorable wife and I took a 1000 mile driving tour of central and south Texas. We had a great time, Alhamdulillah. I didn’t shoot much, for once, just 4 full rolls and 2 partials, so rather than whacking this up by day or film stock or city or something, and with apologies, here’s the whole 5 day, 4 night trip in one long post.**

Many of the places we visited were hit by Hurricane Harvey and intense rainfall, and are underwater as I write this. May God grant mercy and ease to the people and communities effected, and may He bring us all together to rebuild and to take clear, concrete steps to mitigate our impact on the environment, ameen.

Eid Mubarak!

Alhamdulillah, today is Eid al Adha, the celebration of the end of the Hajj (may Allah accept it from those blessed enough to attend this year, and may He allow the rest of us to participate in the future, ameen), an opportunity for us to remember Abraham’s sacrifice, and a chance for us to gather together in remembrance of Allah and his blessings, mercy, and guidance.
